  • 1919

    Henry Sonnenberg founded a machine tool distribution and subsequently manufacturing company in Dusseldorf, Germany.

  • 1940

    After World War II broke out, he moved to the US where he founded Douglas Machinery Company.

  • 1946

    Henry Sonnenberg established a joint venture with inventor Joe Hunter, which developed technology and equipment for continuous casting of lightweight aluminum. Hunter Douglas as we know it today was born.

  • 1947

    Aluminum Blinds, which quickly gained a leading position in the American and Canadian markets, were launched.

  • 1956

    The headquarters was moved to Montreal, Canada.

  • 1960

    Expanded operation in Europe and into Australia and Latin America.

  • 1962

    Launched the first Architectural Product: 84R for ceilings, façades and sun louvers.

  • 1966

    Developed a unique linear aluminum ceiling system, which was the foundation for the Architectural Products business.

  • 1969

    The Group went public, with shares listed on the Montreal and Amsterdam Stock Exchanges.

  • 1971

    The Group headquarters was moved to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Hunter Douglas became a worldwide Holding Group.

  • 1975

    The external sun louver system 70s/132s was launched. The innovative louver system delivered an outstanding performance and an aesthetic look.

  • 1980

    Continued global expansion into Asia, with innovative products meeting the increased demand for fashion and functionality.

  • 1981

    Luxacote®, the globally proprietary coating for exterior application, was developed. The product offered outstanding anti-scratch performance and weatherability.

  • 1985

    The revolutionary Duette® Honeycomb Shades, which were soft, durable and highly energy efficient, were launched.

  • 1989

    Launched the Wide Panel Ceiling system, which helped architects create monolithic and impressive ceilings.

  • 1990

    Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, Luminette® Privacy Sheers and PowerRise® battery-power remote control system were launched.

  • 1992

    Launched open cell ceilings, of which the ingenious structure made the cell ceilings an industry standard.

  • 1993

    Expanded business into Mainland China and started to exploit the potential of the fastest-developing market in the world.

  • 1998

    QuadroClad, the innovative ventilated façade system and an epoch-making product of the curtain wall industry, was launched.

  • 1999

    Developed the curve processing technologies for 300C Wide Panels and obtained patent for invention.

  • 2000

    LiteRise® cordless system and EOS® hardware operating system were launched.

  • 2000s

    Skyline™, Pirouette® and XL window coverings were launched successively.

  • 2003

    Developed Techstyle® acoustical ceilings, which reinvented the traditional ceiling.

  • 2004

    Launched Composite Wide Panels with corrugate core, which broke the dimensional limits of metal ceilings and became an upgrade of Wide Panel Ceilings.

  • 2007

    3form® and NBK® joined the Group. The innovative translucent resin panels and ventilated rainscreen terracotta panels greatly extended our commitment to develop architectural solutions.

  • 2010

    The new modular 3form® Ditto and PVC-free GreenScreen® were launched.

  • 2012

    The group completed expansion in China and successively built facilities for architectural products and window coverings in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou and Xi’an over the past decade.
