When faced with the challenge of designing for a confined space, Bernard Tschumi relies on conceptual power. The University of Cincinnati new athletics center is squeezed into a unique boomerang shape within the existing campus structures. The athletics center, with its five-story atrium, connects the north and south ends of the campus. The result is an inspirational space that is truly a hub of campus activity. Seizing on this dramatic interior, Tschumi worked with designer Eva Maddox to create an installation called "Heritage Hall" showcasing the university achievements. Sepia-toned graphic murals were emblazoned by digital press directly onto the Luxalon® metal ceiling panels by Hunter Douglas. The imagery was developed to express the university vision of touting both sports and academic programs. Such a museum, along with the cantilevered trophy case, can inspire students and faculties. The flatness and flush joints of the system keep the photographs looking continuous and clean. The perforated ceiling panels also enhance the acoustical performance in the space.
