The Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower, a.k.a. Guangzhou New TV Tower, stands upright at the convergence of Guangzhou New Axis and Zhujiang Sightseeing Axis. The tower is a center for sightseeing, but doubles as a large-scale city infrastructure with broadcasting, culture recreation and an open window on the city. At a height of 610m, the tower appears to be a slender lady looking back. It will be amongst the highest TV & Sightseeing Towers around the world after its completion. The unique concept – wide at both ends and tapered in the middle for the building – is so effective that the building spirals into the sky. The entire façade of the steel framework-core cylinder is covered with QuadroClad 25mm, and each of the trapezoid-shaped honeycomb panels differ in size. At the edge of the honeycomb panel, the inner and outer layer panels are overlapped to create a kind of hook to secure the surface flatness of facades while lessening hardware fabrication for the hoisting and assembly. The project is slated to be completed by the end of 2009, and will be open to the public in 2010, at which time it will be responsible for the broadcasting of the XVI Asian Games.
